The GE Montana Fir is a Lowe's exclusive that brings some interesting technology features - Easy Light single-plug connectivity and Easy Shape pre-formed branches - but struggles to justify its $398 price point. With only 5-10% PE content concentrated on outer branch tips and 3,420 total tips on the 7.5-foot version, it sits firmly in budget-to-mid-range construction territory. The 1,200 warm white LEDs deliver strong brightness, but the heavy visible wiring detracts from the realistic look up close. This feels overpriced compared to trees with similar or better specs at lower costs.

What we like
  • 1,200 warm white LEDs provide bright, cheerful illumination
  • Easy Light Technology eliminates plug hassles with single-plug trunk wiring
  • Easy Shape pre-formed branches speed up initial setup
  • Strong branches hold heavier ornaments without sagging according to reviews
  • Three light functions (steady, fade, twinkling) via foot pedal control
Where it could improve
  • Only 5-10% PE content - minimal realistic material for the price
  • Heavy lighting wiring visibly runs through branches and is noticeable up close
  • Expensive at $398 compared to trees with better PE content and tip counts
  • Only 3,420 tips requires significant PVC fluffing to achieve fullness
  • Lowe's exclusive limits price comparison shopping

Construction & Realism

The Montana Fir uses GE's "Just Cut" branding for its molded branch tips, which sounds premium but translates to only 5-10% PE content in practice. Those PE tips live on the outer edges of branches where they're most visible, with standard PVC filling out the interior. At 3,420 total tips on a 7.5-foot tree, you're looking at roughly half the tip count of premium trees like the Yorkshire (5,227 tips) and significantly less than many mid-range options.

The bigger issue is the visible wiring. Multiple aspects of the construction reveal heavy gauge wiring running through branches to power the 1,200 LEDs. From across the room, this blends into the overall tree appearance. Up close during decorating or daily viewing, it's noticeable and detracts from any claim to realism. The PVC branches can create adequate fullness with proper fluffing - reviews mention the tree looking good once set up - but you'll invest time spreading those interior branches to hide gaps.

Easy Light & Easy Shape Technologies

GE's Easy Light Technology is essentially their branding for trunk-integrated wiring (Quick Set in Home Depot trees, Power Pole in others). You connect the three tree sections and power flows automatically without hunting for plugs. It works as advertised and genuinely eliminates a setup hassle.

Easy Shape Technology means the branches come pre-formed and hold their shape better than completely flat-packed branches. This speeds up initial setup since you're not starting from completely collapsed branches, but you still need to fluff and position branches for fullness. It's a nice convenience feature, not a revolutionary time-saver.

The combination of both technologies does deliver on the "easier setup" promise compared to older-style trees with manual plug connections and completely unformed branches. Whether that justifies the premium pricing is another question.

Lighting System

The 1,200 warm white 3mm MicroBright LEDs represent the Montana Fir's strongest selling point. That's a high light count for a 7.5-foot tree - double what you'd find on the Forest Pine ($199) and even more than the Yorkshire's 2,000 lights (though the Yorkshire is taller at 9 feet in comparable pricing).

Reviewers consistently call out the brightness as impressive, which tracks with the high bulb count. The warm white tone is genuine warm white, not the cool blue-white that plagues some budget LEDs. Three light functions (steady, fade, twinkling) via foot pedal control provide basic variety without overwhelming options.

The trade-off for all those lights is the heavy wiring needed to power them, which circles back to the visibility issue mentioned earlier. GE chose brightness over subtlety, which works if you prioritize a well-lit tree over close-up realism.

Value & Verdict

At $398, the Montana Fir sits in an awkward pricing position. You're paying near-premium prices ($399 gets you the Yorkshire Twinkling Fir with 69% PE, 5,227 tips, and memory wire) for what's essentially a budget-to-mid-range tree dressed up with convenience features.

The Easy Light and Easy Shape technologies add value if setup time is your priority, and the 1,200-light count is genuinely impressive. But compare the construction: 5-10% PE versus 69% PE, 3,420 tips versus 5,227 tips, visible heavy wiring versus subtle integration. The Montana Fir asks you to pay for brightness and convenience while accepting significant compromises in realism and build quality.

Being a Lowe's exclusive also limits your ability to price shop. You're locked into Lowe's pricing and seasonal sales, whereas multi-retailer brands like National Tree Company or even Home Depot's in-house brands offer more opportunities to catch deals.

This tree is for you if: You prioritize maximum brightness and easy setup over realistic construction, you're loyal to Lowe's shopping, and you value the convenience technologies enough to accept the premium pricing.

Skip this if: You want good PE content for your money, you're comparing specs across retailers and brands, or you're looking for the best value in the $400 price range (where trees like the Yorkshire offer substantially better construction).
